Welcome to our website! Cara Mia Border Collies is co-owned between myself, Tiffany Wheeler, and Katherine Price. We live together in a small town called Hemphill, Texas on a few acres of land. Between the both of us there have been many times when one of us has had to painstakingly put our foot down about bringing another animal home. We currently have a house full of animals including fish, cats, rats, and of course-- dogs! Together we plan to train, breed, and raise working Catahoula Leopard Dogs and Border Collies.
I have studied animal genetics since I was twelve, learning as much as possible about color inheritance as well as genetic disorder. I still have a lot to learn, but I love what I do so I can't think of anything else I'd rather be learning. Katherine has the common sense and general know-how when it comes to training a dog with respect for the individual animal. Her dog, Bo, is the most well-behaved dog I have ever lived with. If only my brats could learn a thing or two! Our dogs are very spoiled though, because they mean the world to us. We believe that because our pets live such shorter lives than we do, that we should spoil them rotten until the day they die. They are known as Man's Best Friend for a reason, due to their unfaltering devotion and constant drive to enrich our lives with their little antics and unconditional love.
When our mamas are pregnant, they get special treatment which starts with having their own private crate they can go to whenever they want just to get some time alone. Supplements of dry milk mixed into their food are given one week before puppies are due to arrive, and all puppies are born indoors. The crate acts as a safety den for the new mother and her pups. Until they are 4 weeks old the puppies are kept indoors in the room they were born in. After they turn 4 weeks old we start to take them outside together with their mom and let them play in the grass and sunshine for the first time. By the time they are 6 weeks old they have become very familiar with outdoors and have started potty training, and they have been moved outside to sleep in a 5 x 10 kennel together but are still brought inside all the time and let out to run and be puppies all day. By then they are ready to start going to their new homes. All of our puppies are sent to their new homes with a little care package as well as a schedule of their vaccinations and dewormings. I will never ship any of my puppies by airplane, but for a small fee I may be willing to meet you somewhere in Texas or Louisiana. We also recommend a ground shipping company. Otherwise if you are unwilling to travel, I have a page full of links to other breeders that may be in your area or will ship a puppy to you by air.
